Friendly Hills Team Assignments for Meet 1

SOLUTIONS
1.Rewrite as one fraction a/4 + b/5
You need a common denominator; 5a/20 = 4b/20 or 5a+4b over 20.

2. How many centimeters is 2.5 m + 12 mm -3 cm.
Convert all to cm 250 cm + 1.2 cm -3 cm = 248.2 cm.

3. Simplify 5-7 over -12 - -4
5-7 = -2
-12 - -4 = -12+4 = -8
So we have -2/-8 which reduces to 1/4 (Remember a negative divided by a negative is a positive.)

4. The product of two consecutive numbers is 2756. What is the sum of the consecutive numbers?
First estimate. 50x50 is 2500, 60x60 is 3600. So it's between 50 and 60. Since the last digit is 6, it must be the product of 2x3 or 7x8. Since 2756 is closer to 2500 let's try 52x53 which equals 2756. So what are they asking for? The sum. 52+53 =105

5. Rich, David, Tom and John divided up some money. Rich got twice as much as David. Tom got 3/4 as much as John, and John got three times as much as David. If David got $20, how much money was divided up?
D=$20
Work up from the bottom John got 3 times as much as David. J=$60
T= 3/4 of $60. So T=$45
R= 2*David or 2*20 so R=$40
Total amount divided up = $20+$60+$45+40=$165

TEAM EVENT

1. 14 = 4/9 x. Multiply both sides of the equation by 9/4 to get 14x9/4=x. Reduce to 63/2

2. Find the GCF of 1260, 693, and 630. Break down each number to it's factors.
1260 = 10x126 = 2x5x3x42 = 2x5x3x2x3x7 - 2x2x3x3x5x7
693 = 9x77= 3x3x7x11
630=9x7x2x5=2x3x3x5x7
Note that two 3's and a 7 are factors of all three. So 3x3x7=63. 63 is the greatest common factor of
1260, 693, and 630.

Slight Schedule Change

Dismissal times have moved 5 minutes earlier because we must board our bus before school lets out.

Oct 3 FHMS dismissed at 2:35, Heritage at 2:55
Oct 24 Heritage dismissed at 2:50
Nov 14 (no change) Heritage dismissed at 2:55
Dec 5 Heritage dismissed at 2:35 FHMS at 2:55
Jan 9 FHMS dismissed at 2:50

Please pick up children at only the designated school else I will be counting kids and in a panic trying to finding the missing child and then all 50 kids will be late getting back. Pickup times are usually accurate to within two or three minutes unless it's snowing.

Friendly Hills news

Looks like I'm going to be running a chess club/team at FHMS. If any of you math whizzes also play chess, this is your year to try it. You'll get some top-notch coaching, we'll compete in local tournaments, in the winter join a league, and in the spring play in the state championship and in the national championship which for the first time ever will be held in Minneapolis.

My strength as a chess coach is to quickly bring beginners up to a competitive level. I currently coach 5 different teams and have coached state and national champions. So come prepared to learn a lot in a hurry!

Heritage Scores

OK Heritage, like the pre-season Twins we were favorites going into this season, but to win it all we have to do two things:
1) work hard (always a good idea)
2) recruit your nerdy friends - Nick is your brother going to do this - he'd be really good this year

Allison Rocke 9
