Meet 2 Team Test Solutions

FHMS Gold underperformed again! Only 4 of 10! Twenty minutes with 6 top math students. You must not be organized well. Figure out what's going wrong. Here's my guess. Somebody get's an answer and everyone assumes it's done correctly and no one else works on that one. Someone else needs to solve it and compare answers and discuss why they got different answers. People must be spending too much time on problems they can't do. Focus on what you can do. Give Lucy the co-ordinate geometry problems since she's had that course. Two people should work together on a problem. Discuss how you would solve it and once you have a plan, work on it independently and compare answers.

1. How many of the following five numbers are divisible by 45?
Well, to be divisible by 45 it must be divisible by 5 and 9. You know the tests for that.
Correct answers were submitted by Heritage Gold and Red, FHMS Red

2. A slug craws 3.7 meters in 5 minutes. That's 3700mm in 300 sec. or 37mm in 3 seconds
Correct answers were submitted by FHMS Gold and Red

3.When the smaller of two consecutive integers is added to four times the larger, the result is 79. What is the larger of the two integers? So let the smaller be n, so the larger is n+1. Now read that question and write it in an algebraic statement: n+4(n+1)=79. Hence n + 4n + 4 = 79 or 5n=75. Divide by 5 to get n=15. Now READ THE QUESTION. What is the larger? 16
Double check the answer. We think the integers are 15 and 16. when the smaller (15) is added to 4 times 16 (that's) 15 + 64 = 79. Yep, we figured it out!
You could use the 5th grade method of trial and error. 9,10  9+40=49 nope not high enough. 14,15 14+4*15 = 74 ooh so close! 15,16 try it. It works!
No one got it right - FHMS Gold came up with 63.2 ? Really?

4. A square garden has sides of 1/4 (x+2) ft. The perimeter is 16. What's x?
    Perimeter is 16, so side is 4. 1/4 (x+2) = 4  Thus x+2 =16 or x = 14 ft.
Correct answers were submitted by FHMS Gold, Red and Alt, and Heritage Red. Come on Pretzel Sticks!

5. It takes 10 square tiles each with 4-foot sides to cover a floor. How many square tiles with sides 16 inches does it take for the same floor? 4 feet = 16 inches x 3 so it will take nine tiles to cover one big tile. Since it took 10 big tiles it's going to take 90 smaller tiles.
FHMS Gold read inches as feet even though it was in bold print. FHMS Red forgot that if the tile is 3 times as long it is actually 9 times bigger. No one got this right.

6. Points M and N lie within rectangle ABCD with AM + DM = BN = CN = MN = 5.
If AB = 13 and BC = 6, what is the area of quadrilateral AMNB.
Draw the picture. Base is 13, top is 5 Height is half 6. So area is 3*(13+5)/2. =27.
No ISD197 team solved this.

7. Cake recipe 2.75 cups flour and ratio of 1:4 for sugar. Hence 2.75*4=11 cups sugar. But they want 2 cakes so 22 cups = 11 pints = 5.5 quarts.
Correct solutions by Heritage Gold, FHMS Gold and White. FHMS Red came up with 88 quarts!!

8. Start at (0,0) 1 left, 2 down, 3 right, 4 up, 5 left, 6 down etc Where are you at step 11?
First figure out the pattern total up the left and rights, then total the upas and downs.
FHMS Red was the only team of mine to get this right.

9. You have 31 one-dollar bills and 5 envelopes. You want to place the bills in the envelopes such that any amount from $1 to $31 could be obtained by selecting a combination of the envelopes. What's the total amount of money you would place in the envelope with the greatest number of bills?
Use the binary system to place 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 in the 5 envelopes. Read the question again.
None of my teams got this right.

10. Landon couldn't read the first digit. He thought it said 2x+4=28 He solved 2x=24 or x=12. But we're told the real answer is four less (hence 8) So m*8+4 =28 or 8m = 24 So m=3. So the real equation was 3x+4=28. Check your answer
Correct answers submitted by Heritage Gold, FHMS Gold and Red

Meet 2 Results

I don't know whats going on with the blogging software, but if you click on the time stamp at the bottom of the page, you'll get a cleaner report.
SUMMARY
We had a lot of good scores from the alternates today. The only change team-wise was that STA inched past Heritage and SSP outscored Heritage by 6 points, but Heritage still holds a 24 pt lead - not bad for having a practice cancelled.
St Paul Maroon passed Friendly Hills White, but the Gold and Red teams put some distance between them and the rest of the pack.

Meet 2

Reviewing for Meet 2
Go back a few blogs to where I listed the topics and click on a topic for a quick lesson.

Procedure for Meet 2
1. Get your permission forms turned in - Miles, Shakti, Tyler D,, John J., and Sahasra
2. Make arrangements to get a ride home from your school - Heritage at 5:20 FHMS at 5:40
3. Know what color team you are on by looking at the previous blog.
4. You should get an e-pass next Monday to get dismissed early.
FHMS gets dismissed at 2:35, Heritage at 2:55
FHMS should meet me indoors at the north circle
Heritage should gather at the pool entrance.
5. I will take attendance and make any team re-assignments before you get on the bus.
6. The bus will be full. FHMS - move toward the back of the bus - leave room for 14 Heritage
    students.
7. When you are taking the tests make sure you are answering the question that was asked.
Use your time wisely - check your answers. Make estimates - is my answer reasonable?
Make charts, draw diagrams to help you understand the problem.
8. During the team test, communicate with each other
9. If you are being picked up at SPA, or if you are getting off the bus at the school other than your
own, give me a written note.

Meet 1 scores are now complete.
Stella remains in 5th place, Luke remains tied for 6th and Anna is in a 5-way tie for 8th

Scores, Solutions and Team Assignments

There were two problems on the team test that no one got right:

2. Express 370/1776 as a ratio of relatively prime numbers. 370 is easy to factor. 370 = 37 5
So the question remains, is 1776 divisible by any of those factors? Well, obviously 2 and not 5. So it only remains to see if 1776 is divisible by 37 - and it turns out to be. So after dividing both numbers by 2 and by 37, you end up with 5/24

9. You have 3 blue and 3 red marbles in a sack. You reach in and randomly draw 3 marbles. What are the odds you get at least one of each color?
This problem is more easily solved by figuring out the odds of NOT getting one of each color - ie all the same. You draw one marble - doesn't matter which color it is. What are the odds the second matches the first? 5 are left but only 2 match. So 2/5. What are the odds the third matches the first two? 4 are left but only 1 matches. So 1/4. So the odds they all match i 2/5 x 1/4 = 2/20 or 1/10. Therefore the odds that you have at least one of each is 9/10.

Practice Scores for Meet 2

Solution to some problems from practice TEST A
____1. List all the primes between 90 and 100. We can eliminate all the evens right away.
Is 91 prime? 9+1=10 so it's not div. by 3. Not by 5. How about 7. Use the technique I taught
you 91-70 = 21 so yes it's div. by 7 and therefore not prime.
            Is 93 prime - no it;s div. by 3. 95 - no, by 5. 97? not by 3 or 5 or 7. (97-7=90 which makes it
clear) 99 is div. by 9. So the correct answer is just 97.
____3. How many girls in chess club 2+3 =5
How many boys never joined biology club? 180+9=189
____4 The baseball field is 300x300= 90,000 minus the triangle in center field of 180x180
            1/2 bh = 90x180= 16200. So the field is 90,000-16,200=73,800 sq ft
____ 5. Three years ago I was 3 time as old as my sister. Now I'm twice as old as my sister. How old
am I now? The fifth grade method is to draw a chart
Sis 3 yrs ago       Me 3 yrs ago       Me Now         Sis Now
1                           3                         6                  4 Nope I'm not twice as old as she is
                    2                           6                         9                  5 Nope
                    3                           9                         12                6 Yep!
                    4
The 8th grade method is to set up two equations. (Let M be my age now and S be Sis's age)
             M-3 = 3(S-3) and M=2S.
             Since M = 2S, substitute 2S for M in the first equation.
              2S-3 = 3(S-3)
             Next, distribute that 3.    2S-3 = 3S - 9
             take away 2S from both sides   -3= S -9
             add 9 to both sides                     6 = S
So sis is now 6 and since I'm twice as old, I must be 12.
Just to make sure, 3 yrs ago she was 3 and I was 9. Yep, I was 3 times as old.

... on to Meet 2

Meet 1 - It's always difficult to select the right teams on meet 1 because I only have a few tests to base it on. Had I somehow selected the right 6 for gold, I think either ISD197 gold teams would have beaten SPA Blue. I still think we can catch them by the end of the year. Looks like St. Thomas has a much better team this year and will be in the running.

FHMS Highlights - Stella and Luke led the scoring. Lucy Palmer can't make practices, but proved she belongs on gold. 6th grader Ellie Ludwig scored 10 on Event A! 6th grader Tyler Demulling from the white team outscored 3 gold players.

Heritage Highlights: 6th grader Anna Crain made the top ten in the SEMetro Division! Quinn and Emma just missed the top ten. Katy Lyford had the highest score on Event B. 5th grader Wes Hendel had the highest score of any of the 16 or more 5th graders in the SEMetro.

Permission Forms need to be turned in - Heritage - Osvaldo, Emmanuel. FHMS - Stella, Miles, Will Gannon, Tyler, Katie, Shakti, John, Sahasra
