Math Team Scores from Sept. 23

Permission forms are available at the front office. Remember to get them filled out and returned to the main office. Save the schedule.

HERITAGE

I was looking forward to math club today, but no one showed up. Evidently I forgot to leave a written message at the front desk, so no announcement was made. Sorry. We'll just start next week - Room 242 aftre school on Monday 'til 4:15.

FRIENDLY HILLS

We had 13 students at our first Math Team meeting this morning. Six other students signed up but were not there this morning. Also, there are a few who did very well last year, but didn't sign up - like Hannah Kirby, Veronica Morse, and a few others.
Here are the scores from the two tests this morning. As you can see, test B is usually harder than test A. As you can see, there are 3 that look like gold for sure, then 5 or 7 more vying for those last three spots. If it's still tied next week, I'll have to look at last year's scores for tie-breakers.

Seasons Final Results

Congratulations on a great season! FHMS takes 2nd, Heritage 3rd!

Meet Highlights - Dan Keis on Friendly Hills Red gets a perfect score on Event A - the only person at the meet to do so. Victoria Garner, also from FHMS, was one of only two students who scored a 10 on  Event B. Heritage Gold got the second highest score on the Team Event - thanks for your leadership skills Isabel!

Friendly Hills Teams For Meet5

Next Monday's meet is the final meet of the year and will be at Heritage. You'll need to get out a little early, so pick up an early excuse slip from Ms. Dahlstrom in the attendance office on Monday and meet me in the circular entrance nearest the buses. We Leave at 3:00. We'll be back at about 5:20.

A little terminology I forgot to mention this morning for box and whisker plots:
the two boxes and the two whiskers are call "quartiles" meaning one quarter of the values fall in a "quartile. The "inner quartiles" are the two boxes. The whiskers are also called the "lower" and "upper" quartiles. The "range" is the highest value minus the lowest value.

TEAM ASSIGNMENTS

Once again I have to have 2 non-8th graders on each team, so Dan Keis will be replaced by Brigham.
The red team could do quite well next week.
P5c = Practice Test 3, P5d = Practice Test 4, M5r = Meet5 Rating

GOLD TEAM PRACTICE

For additional practice, what point is the intersection of 2x + 3y = 9 and x -5y = -15 ?
Hint: Get x or y all alone in one of the equations, then substitute.
For example, looking at the second equation we can say x = 5y - 15, so we can substitute 5y-15 for x in the first equation, then solve for y. Once you have the y value, you can replace y with it in either equation and solve for x. Now you have both x and y, so (x,y) will be the point of intersection of the two equations.

Practice Results 12-17-12

Even though my formula says Dan Keis does not belong on gold, I might put him there since he did so well on these tests.

The problem that only one (at Heritage - none at FHMS) got was: Simplify
 x2+2x-24
____________
    x-4

Now, in order to simplify this, x2+2x-24 must be divisible by x-4.

So the question is: what times (x-4) = x2+2x-24
(x-4)(x+?) = x2+2x-24    Well, what tie -4 = -24? The missing number must be 6.
(x-4)(x+6) = (x-4)x + (x-4)6 = x2-4x + 6x-24 = x2+2x-24 Aha! So

  x2+2x-24      (x-4) (x+6)
____________   =  ____________ =  x+6  Quite simplified!
    x-4               (x-4)
