Even though my formula says Dan Keis does not belong on gold, I might put him there since he did so well on these tests.
The problem that only one (at Heritage - none at FHMS) got was: Simplify
x2+2x-24
____________
x-4
Now, in order to simplify this, x2+2x-24 must be divisible by x-4.
So the question is: what times (x-4) = x2+2x-24
(x-4)(x+?) = x2+2x-24 Well, what tie -4 = -24? The missing number must be 6.
(x-4)(x+6) = (x-4)x + (x-4)6 = x2-4x + 6x-24 = x2+2x-24 Aha! So
x2+2x-24 (x-4) (x+6)
____________ = ____________ = x+6 Quite simplified!
x-4 (x-4)
