Still a test or two to go. Hey! Sorry, I forgot to explain negative exponents this morning. Here's an easy way to think of it. A lot of math, a lot of chess, a lot of life is patterns. So let' look at the pattern for powers of 2.
Two raised to the 3rd power is 8 (2x2x2)
Two raised to the 2nd power is 4
Two to the 1st power is 2
See the pattern? Each time we lower the power by 1 we divide by 2.
So 2 to the zeroth power must be 1.
2 to the negative first power must be one half.
2 to the negative second power must be one fourth.
2 to the negative third power must be one eight.
Now you can see that 2 to the negative n power is the same as 1 over 2 to the n.

The tests were brutal! It was a new person writing the questions this year and he made them way too hard. He will try to remedy that in meet 2. It looks like SPA is going to run away with it. It also looks like So. St. Paul, who won it 3 years ago, is back. Notice, however, that both Friendly Hills and Heritage beat St. Paul Academy's Blue Team! And don't count out St. Thomas yet, their math team is also their soccer team and they had a game today so they only had 1 student.

MEET1 Instructions and My Prognostication

FRIENDLY HILLS

Go to the front office on Monday morning and get a pass from Liz Dahlstrom. You will need to leave you last hour class at 2:35. The bus will leave at 2:45 sharp. Meet Mr. Heinemann at the circular exit by the buses. We will return at 5:35

HERITAGE

Go to the attendance office on Monday morning and get a pass from Laura Wolf. You will need to leave you last hour class at 2:55. The bus will leave at 3:05 sharp. Meet Mr. Heinemann at the bottom of the sloping hallway at the pool entrance. We will return at 5:20.

At the Meet

Remember to put your name and school and team on your paper - eg John Doe FHMS Red
Remember to not waste time on a problem that is beyond you and concentrate on getting the ones you can do, right. Estimate, make charts, drawings, whatever you need to do - use the back side if necessary. Remember to supply the units if the problem needs them or you lose a point.

Prognostication
Here are the scores from last year. Based on this, I'd say SPA is going to win again, and Heritage and Friendly Hills will battle for 2nd place, but if SPA loses a player, it could be up to which team wants to work the hardest. SSP and STA may bring some strong 7th graders so it could be a free-for-all.
