The 8th grade method is to set up two equations. (Let M be my age now and S be Sis's age)
M-3 = 3(S-3) and M=2S.
Since M = 2S, substitute 2S for M in the first equation.
2S-3 = 3(S-3)
Next, distribute that 3. 2S-3 = 3S - 9
take away 2S from both sides -3= S -9
add 9 to both sides 6 = S
So sis is now 6 and since I'm twice as old, I must be 12.
Just to make sure, 3 yrs ago she was 3 and I was 9. Yep, I was 3 times as old.
